In June, the Paradigm official website published an article titled "Intent-Based Architectures and Their Risks," which brought the concept of Intent to the public for the first time. Protocols and infrastructure related to Intent have rapidly developed, becoming a hot topic of discussion in the cryptocurrency community at the ETHCC conference in July.

Intent is not a new concept. As a well-known founder once said: The trend in the crypto world has always been to abstract and automate operations to the extreme, from aggregators, centralized exchanges, contract wallets, to cross-chain DeFi, all of which are doing this work, as well as oracles and the recent automated middleware, and the recent Telegram bot.

Intent brings new changes. In the past, the focus was on product interaction, while in the AGI era, the focus is on human-machine interaction. AI/LLM (large language models) contain more potential to enhance encrypted interactions.

01, Top-Down Anoma and Bottom-Up Unibot

In the past six months, agreements, projects, and infrastructure related to intention have been continuously booming. Here, I do not intend to explain the concepts verbatim, but rather to glimpse the essence through two excellent examples.

Among the many projects related to intention, the most eye-catching is the Anoma Foundation, which completed its third round of financing of $25 million at the end of May 2023. In the context of severe homogenization in Layer 1, the Anoma Foundation has received a total of $57.8 million in support from investors across three rounds, with its intent-centric architecture Anoma (Dapp full-stack architecture) and Namada (privacy Layer 1), ranking 7th in terms of financing amount among Layer 1/Layer 2 projects that have not yet issued tokens.

Reviewing Anoma's public speech at EthCC, founder Adrian Brink stated that the magic of Anoma lies in the fact that all interactions begin with intent. Users express intent, which is processed through the Black-box Architecture (also known as the Magic Happens). The magic box implements the core transaction process based on intent interactions:

  • User Interaction: Users can send transparent, private, or protected intents to Anoma's black box architecture (intent gossip Layer).
  • Intent Collection and Matching: The parser of the Anoma black box architecture collects intents and performs balanced state transitions to achieve counterparty matching.
  • Transaction processing: The matched transactions are submitted to the encrypted memory pool, where validators send the blocks packaged by proposers to the execution layer to complete execution and verify validity, ultimately completing the state root update.

Behind the brand new interactive form, the Anoma team has identified the underlying pain points of blockchain protocols and reviewed how the architectural limitations of the first generation of Bitcoin's scriptable settlement and the second generation of Ethereum's programmable settlement have led to the current application protocols having at least one Web2 component, which cannot achieve counterparty discovery and resolution. The team states that the intention-centric Anoma architecture represents the third generation of Dapp architecture in the evolution of blockchain protocols, allowing users to define the outcome state they desire, achieving efficient and customizable privacy transactions at the intention level. The intention-centric Dapp architecture will usher in a new era.

Anoma, which has high financing and a new technology architecture, is currently being built by a team of 37 interdisciplinary members from Heliax. Although the Heliax development team has made slow progress over the past two years, they have established a complete innovative ecosystem.

  • Anoma: An intention-centric universal Dapp architecture that can be modularly deployed to L1, L1.5, and L2, allowing modular components to be embedded into various EVM frameworks for invocation.
  • Namada: A privacy settlement Layer1 of the Anoma ecosystem, using PoS mechanism and designed for asset-agnostic inter-chain privacy, will be compatible with Ethereum and IBC chains in the future;
  • AnomaVM: Simplifying DApp development on Anoma using Juvix (an intent-centric programming language) and VampIR (a circuit programming language);
  • Typhon: An improved Typhon consensus based on Cosmos' Tendermint;
  • Taiga: Provides a composable privacy unified execution environment. Taiga defines three types of intents: transparent intent, masked intent, and privacy intent.

Although many institutions, such as a well-known investment company, are enthusiastically promoting Anoma and expressing that the future potential of an intent-centered architecture is limitless, currently, the top-down Anoma has only laid a good technical foundation but has not yet seen any exciting real-world applications; on the other hand, the TG Bot has opened up the imagination for the practical application of intent segmentation scenarios using on-chain automated trading tools.

Unibot is a Telegram-based trading robot (TG Bot) that allows users to perform automated DEX trading through Telegram, providing features such as sniper buying, copy trading, DEX limit orders, privacy, and anti-MEV. Unibot replaces the cumbersome interactions of certain DEXs based on Intent, offering a convenient DeFi interaction experience. Unibot has also spawned a batch of TG Bot clones, and the total market value of the current TG Bot sector is approaching $200 million.

Top-down Anoma is innovation, while bottom-up TG Bot is transformation; top-down Anoma starts from an intent-based underlying architecture, but the team's progress is slow; although TG Bot offers users a new on-chain interactive interface, it is not intelligent and has many security risks.

The two paths converge with a common goal---to simplify the user interaction experience and introduce a new programmable, customizable user interaction interface---User Intent Layer, which allows users to bypass complex on-chain interactions and define transaction status based on user intent.

02, AI is the New UI: Command Interaction VS Intent Interaction

The above two use cases provide a basic understanding of intent. Next, we will explore the changes behind the intent—how AI is transforming the most fundamental layer of the crypto world: the user interaction interface.

The AI paradigm is introducing the third user interface paradigm in the history of computers, shifting to a new interaction mechanism where users tell the computer what they want rather than how to do it.

  • Paradigm One: Batch Processing.
  • Paradigm Two: Command-based interaction design.
  • Paradigm Three: Intent-based Result Specification.

Every revolution in interaction modes throughout history has led to entirely new business models. Generative AI based on LLM brings disruptive changes to human-computer interaction, directly transforming the original human-computer interaction with various software UIs into interaction with the Chatgpt chat window, which is an unprecedented interaction experience. LLM + crypto introduces a new proposition of intention-based interaction to the crypto world, and LLM has the potential to make blockchain interaction smarter by discovering and describing user intentions.

03, The Evolution of the Concept of Intent, Interaction Paradigms, Current Status, Trends

After deeply understanding the trend of AI intelligence behind intent, we further explore the evolution of the concept of intent. Intent is not a new concept; it has existed since the Web2 era. With the rise of search engines like Google, users can input their intent, and the search engine provides relevant search results to satisfy that intent.

With the rise of a well-known e-commerce platform, there has been a significant shift in intent-based architecture, allowing users to express their intention to purchase products, while the platform takes care of logistics. In early 2017, a consulting firm released a report formally introducing the concept of Intent-based Networking. The key to intent-based networking is presenting an interface to users where they only need to express what they want, and the platform will handle the business details.

Intent-based networking is the development trend of network automation and intelligence in the Web2 era. A vice president of a consulting firm pointed out in 2017 that intent-based networking will be the next milestone in the field of networking.

The evolution from Web2 to Web3 has led to an unclear concept of intent in Web3, but there are some common understandings:

  • A definition provided by a well-known investment institution: Intent is a set of declarative constraints that allow users to delegate the creation of transactions to a specialized network of third-party participants while retaining full control over the process.
  • The definition of the intent-based underlying Dapp architecture provided by Anoma: Intent is a message sent by the user to express custom preferences, and intent is a constraint on what the user-defined system can do, rather than a specific execution path.
  • Definition of intent-based trading infrastructure by Propellerheads: Intent refers to the portion of a trade that requires assistance from others, simplifying complex trades by outsourcing the difficult parts to third parties.

In real use cases of intent-based transactions in Web3, users create intents off-chain, outsource them to a resolver off-chain, encapsulating the complexity of blockchain interactions to the resolver while retaining complete control of the process on-chain, thereby lowering the barrier to on-chain interactions.

The intent also brings the LLM architecture concept - intent centric - a user intent-centered architecture. Currently, the crypto protocols and infrastructure related to intent centric are embedded in the interaction layer between users and Crypto, leveraging LLM to provide a better on-chain interaction experience.

LLM+Crypto introduces a new paradigm of human-computer interaction, allowing direct conversion of user intent into smart contract calls. Users only need to express their intentions like using Apple's Siri, while robots/AI Agents/third-party parsers assist in completing complex on-chain operations. The future of intent-based Web3 interactions is poised to significantly reduce the complexity of user on-chain interactions.

AI is the New UI. More and more Web3 projects are exploring the magic of intent. Whether it is intent-based Dapps or intent-based underlying architectures, they all unleash the potential of intent from different angles. We attempt to organize this rapidly evolving field, categorizing it into four major categories from an interaction perspective, and tracking the latest status and trends:

Infrastructure: (Intent-Centric Intent Architecture Layer)

  • DappOS: The first intent-centric Web3 operating protocol that builds a middleware layer between users and public chains, cross-chain bridges, and other crypto infrastructure, allowing Web3 users to seamlessly and imperceptibly interact with products. Recently, DappOS released version V2.
  • Flash 2.0 SUAVE: SUAVE is an independent plug-and-play modular MEV full-chain ordering layer. Preferences (the core concept of SUAVE) is similar to the Intent concept, both providing ordinary users with customized trading methods, ultimately helping users achieve the best execution. Flashbots plans to launch SUAVE Centauri in Q4 2023.
  • Anoma: A general Dapp architecture centered around intent, which can be modularly deployed to L1, L1.5, and L2, and embedded into various EVM frameworks using modular components. The latest update in the Anoma ecosystem is that the Anoma privacy settlement Layer1---Namada is about to launch its v0.22.0 testnet.
  • Cow Protocol: CoW Protocol builds an underlying settlement network for traders and parsers, and launched the new Cow Hooks intent system in July to enable customized DeFi operations. CoW Protocol processed a total trading volume of $1.05 billion and generated a profit of $5.3 million in August.

  • ERC 4337: The User Operation of ERC 4337 represents the user's intent, including the tokens for paying gas, payment choices, and login methods, replacing the current transaction memory pool to achieve account abstraction and improve wallet interaction experience.

  • Supporting facilities related to intention: Juvix (an intention-based programming language), a well-known protocol (open-source NFT trading protocol), a well-known project (Web3 automated execution layer providing automated services for smart contracts), a well-known project (low-level intention automation tool), a well-known project (smart contract authorization proxy tool), a well-known project (off-chain automation service), a well-known project (intention-based on-chain derivatives trading framework).
